The research team at NTNU has developed a mutant alga which produces a potent antioxidant carotenoid (“XY”). XY is a metabolite of the well-known antioxidant carotenoid “X“ and XY is thought to be responsible for the positive health effects of X. XY is also believed to be more potent and have higher bioavailability than X.
Market
The development of this mutant alga presents a potential opportunity to reach new markets with a more effective product than the original X or potentially other carotenoids.
